The pan attracts large concentrations of waders and waterfowl species, many of which breed here, making this one of the most important breeding areas on the West Coast. Between January and mid-May, however, the pan is dry and the birds leave the area; the best time to see them in large flocks is during spring. In addition to the 165 bird species recorded, there are springbok, Cape grysbok, common duiker, steenbok and yellow and small grey mongooses. The Rocher Pan area receives much of its sparse rainfall in winter, and is often swept by strong winds. Location: West Coast; north-west of Cape Town. Access: From Cape Town take the N7 northwards to Piketberg and turn left onto the R399; travel for 67 km to Velddrift and turn right onto the R27; continue for 15 km. The reserve leis west of the road and is singposted. Free self-help permit system. Accommodation: None. Velddrif offers a variety of accommodation. Other facilities: Short pathways; observation platforms; bird-watching hides; picnic area. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: May to August - 08h00 to 17h00; September to April - 07h00 to 18h00. |
